Description :
On Friday, 10th December, the students of Class IV from Birla High School, accompanied by their teachers, embarked on an educational field trip to Fort William, Kolkata. This historical fort, built during the British era, stands as a testament to colonial architecture and military prowess. Its strategic location along the eastern bank of the Hooghly River makes it an iconic landmark in Kolkata. The journey began with three buses arranged by the school. The students boarded the buses at 9:00 am and were filled with excitement and curiosity. Upon reaching Fort William, everyone marveled at the imposing structure surrounded by lush greenery and high walls. A major highlight of the trip was the Fort William Museum, a treasure trove of history. The museum housed an extensive collection of guns, weapons, and ammunition from different eras. The students were awestruck by the display of vintage rifles, cannons, and swords, many of which bore intricate designs and engravings. The guide explained how these weapons were used during battles and the role of Fort William in safeguarding the British Empire in India. The museum also featured detailed maps and artifacts that provided a glimpse into the military strategies of the past. Another fascinating section was the grand library within the fort. The library was stocked with thousands of books, some dating back to the colonial period. The shelves were lined with works on history, geography, and military science, offering insights into the intellectual pursuits of the time. The students were particularly intrigued by the old manuscripts and journals, which highlighted the importance of knowledge in shaping military operations. The day was packed with learning and fun. The guide, who was well-informed and engaging, shared numerous anecdotes and facts about Fort William's history, making the visit even more enriching. The students and teachers appreciated the opportunity to explore this restricted area, as entry to Fort William is generally limited to army personnel. This initiative by the school provided an excellent learning experience, blending history with adventure. It was a day well spent, leaving the students with a sense of pride and curiosity about India’s rich historical heritage.
